Divine Purpose
John 4:34
”Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and
to finish his work.”
Jesus, coming to this world as a man, needed to eat like any other man.
He needed food to survive. But something even greater than food kept him
going. He had a purpose that kept him going, even when it seemed like all
was stacked up against him. Jesus’ purpose was to do the will of his Father
and to finish his work.
The Father’s will was that Jesus would die on the cross to pay the penalty
for sin. Jesus knew God’s will and directed his life to accomplish that
will. Nothing would sway Jesus from his divine purpose. Just before he died,
Jesus was finally able to say, “It is finished.”
We all need a purpose
or vision to keep us going. Life without a purpose is hardly worth living.
As Christians, we have a divine purpose. Like Jesus, our purpose is to accomplish
God’s will and finish his work.
How do we know God’s will? We discover
God’s will simply by reading his Word. As we read his Word, we realize he
wants us to grow in our relationship with him and share his love with others.
This divine purpose is the same for every Christians. The details may be
different, but the basics are the same.
Once we know our purpose, shouldn’t we direct our lives to fulfill our purpose?
Shouldn’t we focus our time and effort on accomplishing God’s will? Too
often we focus on activities that have nothing to do with our divine purpose.
We sometimes get caught up in our own plans and dreams and then realize
we left God out of the picture.
If we fix our divine purpose firmly in
our hearts, we will be less likely to sway from the truth. We will have
direction in our lives to keep us going even when the road seems rough.
We may suffer hardship, but when we remind ourselves that people still need
to hear about God’s love we will hopefully keep marching onward.
Let’s keep working because God’s work isn’t finished yet. Many people still
need to hear.
