Wedding Invitations
Matthew 22:9
“Go ye therefore into the highways, and as many as ye shall find, bid to
the marriage.”
A few weeks ago, I received a wedding invitation in the mail. My friend
Mark is getting married and wants me to attend his wedding. Mark told me
to let him know if I could attend and whom I was bringing with me. Now,
I’m sure Mark would be a little surprised if I told him I was bringing all
the people who read my devotionals with me to his wedding. He is a nice
guy but I’m sure he doesn’t mean I can bring that many people with me. He
wouldn’t have room for a few hundred extra guests.
About twelve years ago, I received an invitation to another wedding. This
wedding is still in the future. I think one reason I received the invitation
so long before the wedding is so that I had time to invite others. This
wedding invitation said, “Go ye therefore into the highways, and as many
as ye shall find, bid to the marriage.”
I greatly look forward to this wedding because it’s the marriage of Jesus
Christ and his church. Jesus invited me to his wedding and urged me to invite
others. He gave no limit to the number of people I could invite. He also
put no limits on the type of people I could invite. Rich or poor. Male or
female. Black or white. College-educated or high school dropouts. Homeless
or homeowners. Jesus told me to invite as many as I could find.
Many of you have already received an invitation to Jesus’ wedding. Some
of you plan to attend, but have forgotten that Jesus asked you to invite
others. Or maybe you are inviting others, but you’re only choosing certain
people to invite. Jesus told us to invite as many as we could find. We need
to let everyone know about the greatest wedding mankind will ever see.
Others of you have received the invitation, but you have chosen not to attend.
You say you like Jesus, but you really don’t want to give up your time to
attend his wedding. You want to live your own life and do your own thing.
I urge you to read the invitation again. This invitation can be found all
through the Bible if you take the time to look. Start in the Gospel of John
and find out the importance of attending this wedding.
I’m not sure yet if I’ll make it to Mark’s wedding, but I know I greatly
desire to be at Jesus’ wedding. Will I see you there?
