Consider Your High Priest
The Administrator of what you Speak
Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the
Apostle and High Priest of our profession (or confession), the Anointed
Yahshua. (Christ Jesus) (Heb.3:1)
I’m sure that this scripture sounds ultra religious to most people. It used
to paint a picture in my mind of medieval churches with chanting priests
dressed in black robes and pointed hats carrying out their unreal religious
rites. It is one of those verses that I would always skip over because of
that very reason. I did not understand it mainly because of the King James
English (which incidentally I have grown to love – and is the translation,
which I now use more than any other).
But if we had to analyze this verse
closely, we would see that in actual fact it teaches us a very important
principle. In fact, I believe it is a principle, which, due to a lack of
knowledge, very few Christians live by to their own detriment. I speak from
experience because I was one of those Christians who until relatively recently
was not even aware of this life changing principle. Even today I am still
struggling to overcome the results of years of wrong talking.
We are the
only creatures on this earth who have been created in the image of God.
One of the greatest differences between man and any other creature is that
only man communicates by means of spoken words. That fact sets us apart
from all other creatures. That truth enables us to communicate with the
God, who chose to use words as His means of creating this vast universe
and everything in it, as well as being His chosen method of communication.
(Gen.1:1-3, Joh.1:1-3 & 14)
God created by means of the spoken Word. (Heb.11:3) The spiritual force
of God’s faith was conveyed or transported to carry out its creative work
with spoken words. God’s spoken words were the vessels carrying His creative
power. Man was given dominion over everything in this world, and his work
of dominating (whether for good or bad) is also accomplished with words.
Just think about that. There could be no education, no inventions, no great
achievements without words. We even think in words. Some might argue that
we think in pictures. That is true – depending on what you’re thinking about
– but try to describe what you’re thinking! It’s virtually impossible without
using words.
But let’s get back to our scripture. The writer is addressing his holy brethren.
Far from being “holier than thou” religious, he is simply speaking to fellow
believers in the Lord Yahshua. (Jesus) The word “holy” has over the centuries
acquired a pious, outwardly religious meaning. But it simply means; “set
apart for God’s use.” Another word which has had its meaning changed by
traditional religion is “saint.” It simply means; a holy one. All Christians
are therefore the saints of God. He has set them apart for His exclusive
use. They are holy.
Now let’s look at what this scripture is exhorting us to do. We are to consider
the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, Yahshua the Anointed One
(Jesus Christ). Forget for a moment the traditional religious meaning of
the word – Apostle. Again it is the common Greek word meaning; sent one.
Unfortunately it was transliterated rather than translated from the Greek,
and so the word apostle was placed on a religious pedestal. Whenever someone
was referred to as an apostle, he was looked upon in awe as being someone
very special. If you were Greek and sent your child to the corner café to
buy bread and milk, then he would be an apostle to the café. He is one sent
to the café – nothing special. The thing that makes an apostle special
is the purpose for which he was sent. It is the message he was sent to
convey which is important.
So then Yahshua, the Word (Joh.1:14) was the
one who was sent by God. He was an Apostle of God. Sent specially by God
for a purpose. In the context of this verse, what was that purpose? He
was sent to be High Priest. A priest is one who stands between God and man.
He is representative of both parties. He represents God to man – or speaks
to man on behalf of God, and at the same time he represents man to God –
or speaks on behalf of man to God.
But Yahshua is not only a Priest. He
is the High Priest. That means He is the Principal Priest or the only one
who has that unique position of representing both God and Man. All believers
in Yahshua are priests in their own right – made so by God, (Rev.1:6) but
not one of us can approach God the Father directly without going through
our High Priest – the Lord Yahshua. (Joh.14:6)
But a priest is much more than just a representative. He is literally one
who has been authorized by God to administer, execute, implement and to
carry into effect. What is Yahshua to administer and execute? Nothing else,
but our confession of the Word of God in faith. But if we don’t give Him
faith filled words to work with, His hands are tied. He is certainly not
going to be the administrator of fear filled words. This is the sense in
which we are to consider Him – give Him something to work with. When a
believer continually complains and speaks words of worry and fear then that
believer (a contradiction in terms) is not considering the High Priest of
his confession.
Therefore child of God – believer – be considerate towards
your Lord. Fill your heart with His living Word so that you will have something
worthwhile to return to Him in faith (Is.55:11) as you live through the
circumstances of life. The faith filled words you speak pleases Him and
brings Him glory as His purpose is fulfilled in your life.
