Fishermen
There are two kinds of people, those who fish
and those who don’t. Usually those who don’t
fish, don’t understand the appeal of it for the ones who do.
Fishing and fisherman come in a wide variety of types and techniques.
There are commercial fishermen who use large
nets and draw in anything that might be swimming in the area. They keep
the ones they want and throw the other ones back.
There are fly fishermen who spend hours
carefully researching insects and tying flies to match. They observe the
stream or lake and match the fly they use to the insect life and meticulously
cast for specific fish.
There are fishing fanatics who will fish
anywhere, anytime for anything that swims. Every spare moment is spent on
or near the water.
Casual fishermen, like to fish now and then.
They quite enjoy it when they do go, but don’t worry too much about catching
anything.
Some have huge tackle boxes filled with every
size and shape of lure imaginable. They have a variety of rods and reels
for every occasion.
Others have a single pole and a small box with a couple of favourite lures.
Some are purists about techniques. Others are
pragmatic, they will use anything that is legal and works.
There are fishermen who specialize in one
species of fish and look down their noses at
people who fish for anything else. Others fish for whatever they happen
to catch.
For some the thrill is in the catch. Others like the thrill of the chase.
Some fish as an excuse for fellowship (that’s me), others love to fish alone.
I don’t know that there is a right way or a
wrong way to fish, as long as you keep within
the appropriate regulations.
Fishermen are kind of like Christians and
churches. We’re called to share the Gospel of
Jesus Christ.
As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon
called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake,
for they were fishermen. ‘"Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make
you fishers of
men.” Matthew 4:18-19 NIV
Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name
of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to
obey everything I have commanded you.And surely I am with you always, to
the very end of the age. Matthew 28:18-19 NIV
Some Christians and churches understand that we are to share. Others don’t
understand that
concept.
It is clear though that all Christians are to
tell others about Jesus. Like fishermen the
techniques they use may be different, but they should be fishing.
How much fishing have you done lately?
Until next time, may you take the time to share the Gospel with someone.
Use words, or actions, whatever style suits your gifts and personality,
but start fishing.
God bless.
