" This Do In Remembrance of Me "
" And when the hour was come , He sat down and the twelve apostles with
Him.
And He said unto them; ' With desire I have desired to eat this Passover
with you
before I suffer:
For I say unto you, I will not anymore eat thereof, until
it be fulfilled in the Kingdom of God. '
And He took the cup , and gave thanks , and said;
Take this , and divide it among yourselves:
For I say unto you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the
Kingdom of God shall come. '
And He took bread , and gave thanks , and brake it , and gave unto them
, saying;
This is My Body which is given for you: this do in remembrance
of Me. '
Likewise also the cup after supper , saying; This cup is the New
Testament ( or Covenant )
in My Blood , which is shed for you. ' "
Luke 22:14 - 20
Why the emphasis on the words " the cup " ? Because it is a very important
revelation.
The custom of the Passover was to sit four cups on the table where the Passover
meal
would be eaten. The middle cup was always turned upside down and never touched
because
it had been reserved for the coming Messiah. So, when Jesus took the cup
, this was the cup
the scripture was referring to. Have you ever noticed that in some paintings
of The Lord's
Supper , the disciples look shocked , either looking at one another or looking
at Jesus ?
There is a lot of confusion today surrounding The Lord's Supper , or Communion
as it is
also referred to as. Jesus wants us to have communion with Him. But , some
teachings today
have misunderstood Communion.
In several passages , including the one
above , Jesus told us to " do this in remembrance of Me " .
( 1 Corinthians 11:24 - 26 , Matthew 26:26 - 39 )
But what happens if we take Communion unworthily ? According to 1 Corinthinans
11:27 , we will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.
So, that
being the case , how can we become worthy to take Communion with our Lord?
After all , we all have sinned and come short of God's glory! ( Romans 3:23
) Look at
Judas Iscariot! Jesus , knowing that he would betray Him and even telling
him so still allowed Judas to eat the Lord's Supper with Him! ( John 13:21
- 27 )
Here's how you can become worthy to take Communion ( or The Lord's Supper
) :
1. Examine Yourself : ( 1 Corinthians 11:28 - 32 )
2. Recognize that You are a sinner and your sinful condition: ( 1 John 1:9
)
3. Seek the Lord's Forgiveness: ( Matthew 6:33 Colossians 3:1 - 2 )
My church has communion every first Sunday morning. I always make it a point
to pray a special prayer in addition to my normal prayer time and ask Jesus
to forgive me where I have failed Him.
