Covenant Talk Covenant Talk

"And it came to pass, that, when the sun went down, and it was dark, behold a smoking furnace appeared……" (partially paraphrased)
Genesis 15:17a

"For the Lord thy God is a consuming fire ……"
Deuteronomy 4:24

"For our God is a consuming fire."
Hebrews 12:29

"And it came to pass, that, when the sun went down, and it was dark, behold a burning lamp appeared……." (partially paraphrased)
Genesis 15:17b

"Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path."
Psalms 119:105

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by Him; and without Him was not anything made that was made."
John 1:1-3

What you have just read were examples of covenant talk. The smoking furnace represented Almighty God Himself. The burning lamp represented Jesus Christ His Son.

Did you know that the word "Testament" actually means "covenant"? So, the Old and New Testaments are actually the Old and New Covenants! You cannot do away with a covenant, (unless you want to die) you can only add to or improve it, which is what Jesus did! (Matthew 26:26-28)

Have you ever given any thought about the cup that Jesus took? Probably not. (I never had before.) Well, the fact is that it that cup which Jesus took was the cup which for centuries had set unused on the Passover table, being reserved for the coming Messiah. Imagine the disciples shock, when Jesus took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying; "Drink ye all of it."

Look at what Paul later wrote to the Hebrews in chapter 8 verses 1 and 6. He wrote that Jesus is the mediator of a better covenant with better promises! Because of this better covenant, our sins have been wiped out, not just covered up! Praise God!

"He was wounded for our transgressions……"
Isaiah 53:5

"As far as the east is from the west, so far hath He removed our transgressions from us."
(Psalms 103:12)

Praise God for making a way for the remission of our sins!
(Matthew 26:28)
