Covenant Talk
Title: Drinking Wine: What Does The Bible Say? Part 1
by Michael Isaacks
( Pastor Steve Teel originally preached this series.
For a different outlook on this subject, check out Kevin Taylor's page at
http://www.faithmania.com/kevintaylor-article-glassofwine.html . The series
to be presented here is not to dispute Kevin's teaching. It is simply to
present what I have learned concerning this subject. I encourage you to
read both presentations on this subject, pray and then decide where you
stand on this subject. Kevin has other outstanding articles in a series
he is doing he has entitled; " Is It OK To? " Check them out, they are worthwhile
reading. Now, for my thoughts on this subject. )
Itching Ears
To begin, let me say that I am presenting this series for your consideration.
I strongly urge you to take what will be presented
in the days to come, pray about it and
then make an informed decision about
it.
Don't just take my word for it, do some
further investigation in God's Word and
hear His voice on the subject.
For years I have wondered if it was alright
for a Christian to drink wine
or alcohol in
general. I had no evidence to back up my
belief that Christians should stay away
from alcoholic drinks. After all,
people
said; " What do you think they drank
at the Last Supper, boy?! " And also;
" Did Jesus not turn water into wine? "
And, " Paul told Timothy to drink a little
wine for his stomach's sake, did he not? "
In the days to come. We will explore this
question as well as look at the
reasons
people give to justify thier drinking alcohol.
First of all, Jesus wants us to know the truth because He said in John 8:32
that; " you shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free. " But,
Paul told Timothy in 2 Timothy 4:3 that people not endure sound doctrine;
but after
their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching
ears;"
Let's look at a few Greek words here which are used in original Greek
translation of this verse:
1. The Greek word epi thumia , which is the Greek word used here for lust
and means " the desires of the flesh that result from a diseased condition
of the mind. " ( Don't get into offense, I'm just reporting the
Greek translation!
)
