Title: Drinking Wine: What Does The Bible Say? Part 4
by Michael Isaacks
How Does God Feel Concerning Wine?
God didn't just say; " Don't do it, cause I said so! "
He gave us reasons not to drink in His Word.
Whoredom and wine and new
wine take away the heart.
( Hosea 4:11 )
Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling?
who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes?
They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine.Look not
thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup,
when it moveth itself aright. At the last it biteth like a serpent, and
stingeth like an adder.
( Proverbs 23:29 - 32 )
It is good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor any thing whereby
thy brother stumbleth, or is offended, or is made weak.
( Romans 14:21 )
So, why did God say that it is bad to drink alcohol, wine in particular?
1. It takes away your understanding. ( The Greek word
used there for "
heart " translated means understanding.
2. It bites like a serpent and stings like an adder.
3. It can cause your
brother to stumble, weaken his faith in God or get into offense toward you
and God.
God also has words for wine experts and bartenders:
Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own
sight!
Woe unto them that are mighty to drink wine, and men of strength to mingle
strong drink:
( Isaiah 5:21 - 22 )
The Aramic word used for " mighty to drink wine " translates " connoisseurs
, or wine experts. The Aramic word used for " men of strength to mingle
strong drink " translates bartenders. So. Just as ministers of the Word
have to give an accounting for what they preach, bartenders will have to
give an account for what they sell.
