Title
The Awesome wonders of God
by David Pitman
**READ ISAIAH 40:12-14** (after reading this passage, continue reading
on....)
Isaiah uses a series of rhetorical questions to show God's complete
superiority over everything in creation. Verse 12 shows us that "His power
is unlimited, and [that] no creature can compare with [Him], much less
contend with" Him (Matthew Henry's Commentary). God's vast reach over
creation is evident here. It says, "Who has measured the waters in the
hollow of his hand, or with the breadth of his hand marked off the heavens?"
When we view the universe we live in, it completely astounds our minds.
There is so much we cannot explain or even begin to understand; yet He
measures all this and the universe in just the width of His hand! Even all
the waters are contained in one small portion of His palm! The dry deserts
and the wet marshlands are both entirely controlled by Him.
This verse continues to show us a second aspect of God in which He has vast
strength, "Who has held the dust of the earth in a basket, or weighed the
mountains on the scales and the hills in a balance?" Just as a tradesman
loads items in and out of his scales, so God can easily move and relocate
mountains and hills. He positions each mountain precisely, as if He had
weighed them with balances and distributed their weight perfectly to adapt
to their specific location. There is no one who has control over the
universe like God does! Alexander Pope (1688-1744) said, "To him no high,
no
low, no great, no small; he fills, he bounds, connects, and equals all."
Where does this place us in comparison to God? How much more powerful is
He
than we are? We are nothing but measly specks of dust on a speck of a
planet, but He still chooses to love us and care for us, even to the point
where He sent His son to earth in order save us! Do you view God as being
your equal with the inclusion of unlimited resources? Or, do you see Him
from the perspective that Isaiah describes?
Isaiah doesn't stop here, though. Verses 13 and 14 show us that His wisdom
is utterly unsearchable. "Who has understood the mind of the LORD, or
instructed him as his counselor? Whom did the LORD consult to enlighten
him,
and who taught him the right way? Who was it that taught him knowledge or
showed him the path of understanding?" No one has done or can do what God
is
capable of doing. He needs no assistance or suggestions because there is
nothing he cannot do or has not already considered. God does not need to
be
told what needs to be attended to because He already knows it perfectly.
He
already knows the right and proper means for completing what must be
accomplished. Sometimes we think we can tell God what to do or we question
what He is doing in our life, but we forget how He is in complete control.
The kind of control and complete authority He has over this universe is
far
beyond our wildest speculations. Who are we to doubt his wisdom and question
how He chooses to lead our lives? His understanding completely surpasses
our
comprehension! Does your view of God line up with this Biblical view? Does
it affect the way you live your life?
Spend some time in prayer with the Lord asking Him to show you the areas
of
your life that are not submitted 100% to Him. Evaluate those areas and write
down what He shows you in your Spiritual Journal. Why are those certain
areas not committed to the Lord? What must you do to turn them over to Him
and keep them turned over to Him. Taking areas of our life back into our
own
hands is too easy sometimes, but just after what we've seen so far in
Isaiah, who's hands would you rather place your life in: yours or God's?
This may seem costly at times, but hang on through the rest of our study
in
Isaiah and I think you will see just how much secure you are with God than
any other place. Talk with Him honestly about it. He's eagerly waiting to
talk with you...
