Title: Discipleship 19
by Dennis Reschke
Dominating Fathers:
1. Function as if they are the
source of guidance for people's lives.
2. Emphasize the rights of leaders.
3. Set leaders apart and give them special privileges.
4. Seek to control people's actions.
5. Emphasize the importance of the leaders ministering to others.
6. Use rules and laws to control people and force them to conform to a mold.
In the early 80's there was a movement in certain circles called the discipleship
movement. This shift took certain Scriptures too far and demanded all the
"sheep" to live by every dictate of the elders and pastors, down to the
point of what kind of car you should buy and who you should date. This is
an abuse of power and it left many along the wayside wounded. Leaders, above
all, should be servants not masters. There is a caveat, however, that leaders
aren't slaves to every whim of the sheep. Sheep tend to want to stay sheep
and not grow up to be leaders themselves.
Fathers in the Lord:
1. Believe that God is the source of guidance and
desire to help other Christians learn to hear His voice.
2. Emphasize the responsibilities of leaders.
3. Emphasize the body of Christ serving one another.
4. Encourage people to be dependent on God.
5. Emphasize the importance of equipping the saints for the word of the
ministry.
6. Provide an atmosphere of trust and grace to encourage growth.
