Title: The Lamb
by Diann Messer

The Lamb
Gentle Shepherd, always leading, this Your lamb along life’s
way;
Close I follow through the meadow, step-by-step, I will not stray.
Yet Your feet kept moving forward, past this lushness that I love;
Into forest thick with trees that tower, tower, far above.
Oft I paused to rest in coolness by the shaded forest brook;
Then the gentle prodding always, of Your constant Shepherd’s hook.
Fast your feet kept moving onward, through the mire that slowed my step;
Across the canyons where I faltered, lost my footing as I crept.
Tumbling downward toward the valley, falling, falling, pain and sorrow;
Now a long way from the sunlight, fear today and dark tomorrow.
Then I hear the steadfast footsteps, Gentle Shepherd drawing nigh;
Rescues me from pits of darkness, wounded lamb now carried high!
Up the paths of rocks and stones, through the way of briars and brambles;
Fast your feet keep moving onward through debris of life in shambles.
Soothing hands that touch and comfort wounds that pain on pain impart;
Then the gentle beating always, of Your constant Shepherd’s heart.
Strong and swift Your steps press forward, constant, constant upward flight!
Up the mountain through each crevice, ever-striding toward the light.
Leaning now against the gentle beating of Your Shepherd’s heart;
Resting, trusting, free from worry, carried through each treacherous part.
Soon I follow close beside You, gaining strength along the way;
Drawing strength and hope and gladness, pressing upward day-by-day.
Ever moving toward the summit, till I’m standing face to face;
Viewing life from higher places, resting in Your love and grace.
See the cross that stands before me, Blessed Lamb of sacrifice!
The Lamb of God became my Shepherd; just for me He paid the price.
See the blood that flows so freely down the mount called Calvary;
O’er each stone and rock and crevice, flowing down o’er you and me.
Flowing downward toward the valley, into pits of darkness there;
Washing clean each sin and sorrow, wash away all guilt and care!
Cleanse my soul with cool, fresh water from Your brook of life and light
Cleansing fountain flowing onward, splashing canyons clean and bright!
Surging stream flowing forward through the forest of my mind;
Rushing rivers reach the meadows, forming fruit upon the vine.
