DevotionalTitle: O.K. -- line up! by David George O.K. -- line up!Some time ago I went with several friends to a local restaurant for breakfast. When the waitress came to pour our coffee, I noticed that the pot had stains on it that could have been there since the Civil War. I asked, “When was the last time that pot was cleaned.” Instead of a reply, I got an icy stare. I told my friends, “If the pot is filthy, so is the kitchen.” I’ve never gone back, and I’ve renamed it Ptomaine Palace (yes, ptomaine begins with a P).Within Christendom we have two kinds of folks -- those who are faking Christianity and those who really are Christian through confession and faith in Jesus Christ. Just like the coffee pot probably exposed the true nature of the kitchen, a person’s true colors will eventually show. Vance Havner used to say, “What’s in the well will come up in the bucket.” It is God’s privilege, not ours, to know who is real and who is pseudo. Our responsibility is to make sure that people can’t read “fraud” on the back of our Christian T-shirts. For those, however, who insist on being “fruit inspectors,” they should find the fruits of the Spirit to be very evident in our lives. Gal 5:22 (nlt), “When the Holy Spirit controls our lives, He will produce in us: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control.” O.K. folks, let’s all line up. It’s time for fruit self-inspection.
In 1997 I had a stroke that crippled my left side. Upon release from therapy I started a ministry of daily e-mail devotions called E-Cheer to encourage others. I am a layman, having spent my career as service manager for the Allen Organ Co. |
