DevotionalTitle: It's Yours, Too! by David George It's Yours, Too!This would make a good sign for the front of your church: “Under the same management for over 2000 years.”You probably know people, as I do, who mistake devotion to mean dour or saved to mean sanctimonious (hypocritically devout). If only they could learn that joy is one of God’s favorite words -- He inspired Bible writers to use it 155 times. Webster says that joy is the emotion evoked by well-being, success or good fortune. That describes a Christian, or should. If you expect to attract non-believers to Christ, remember this old adage -- “You can attract more flies with honey than you can with vinegar.” You are intelligent enough to extrapolate that into a formula for Christian witnessing. Joy should be one of the foundation blocks of our Christian faith. It is listed as one of the first fruits of the Spirit. I realize that there are some who overdo it and assume that joy expresses itself in back-slapping hilarity, but I doubt that that is what God had in mind when He inspired the use of the word. The last part of Nehemiah 8:10 (nlt) says, “...Don’t be dejected and sad, for the joy of the Lord is your strength” -- yours, too!
In 1997 I had a stroke that crippled my left side. Upon release from therapy I started a ministry of daily e-mail devotions called E-Cheer to encourage others. I am a layman, having spent my career as service manager for the Allen Organ Co. |
