DevotionalTitle: A Clear Message by David George A Clear MessageHow hot is it? The best parking spot is determined by shade, not distance.Have you ever looked at some of the sayings on church bulletin boards and wondered how a non-Christian would react? I do it all the time. I try to envision a non-believer’s reaction. Too often, the sayings are meant to be clever instead of conveying a meaningful and understandable message. Case in point: A local church has this on its bulletin board -- “The keys to the kingdom are not hanging on the gate.” Now what does that mean to someone who is not versed in Christian language? It means nothing -- it is a wasted message. They don’t know what is meant by “kingdom” or ”gate.” The world does not understand our unique church language or slanguage. I think that church bulletin boards should use wording and messages that will encourage the unchurched to come in for a visit. Let’s face it, a lot more non-Christians will pass that sign than Christians. Therefore, what we say should be inviting and unmistakably clear rather than just clever. This verse in 1 Cor. 14:7 (nlt) speaks of a particular situation in the church, but I believe we can apply its concept to our discussion: “Even musical instruments like the flute or the harp, though they are lifeless, are examples of the need for speaking in plain language. For no one will recognize the melody unless the notes are played clearly.” Get it? That’s my stump speech for today.
In 1997 I had a stroke that crippled my left side. Upon release from therapy I started a ministry of daily e-mail devotions called E-Cheer to encourage others. I am a layman, having spent my career as service manager for the Allen Organ Co. |
