DevotionalTitle: A Worthy Goal by David George A Worthy GoalYesterday, in my shop, I cut a dowel for Betty for a quilt hanging. I don’t understand -- I cut it off twice and it was still too short. I think I lacked discernment.Several hundred yards from our home we have a nice hiking and biking trail that was built over an old railroad bed. It is nicely blacktopped. On one side of the trail they added a grass path for horseback riding. At the start of the trail they even marked out a large section of the parking lot for parking horse trailers. In the three or so years since its completion, we have never seen one single horse on that trail. A lot of money was spent because some politician said, “wouldn’t it be nice if.” I’ve seen that in churches. Some forceful individual says, “wouldn’t it be nice if,” and then money is spent on a project that gets little or no use. We even do that in our homes. We buy something because we say, “wouldn’t it be nice if,” and next summer it is an item for the garage sale. All of this happens when discernment is temporarily shelved -- we get talked into something. The same thing can happen in our spiritual lives. A new fad comes along in our churches and discernment gets pushed aside by enthusiasm, and we adopt something that may not be wise. As we pray each day, we should ask God for discernment, for Psalm 119:125 (nlt) says, “Give discernment to me your servant: then I will understand your decrees.” I wish I had $1 for every dumb decision I’ve made -- how about you? Discernment seems like a most worthy goal.
In 1997 I had a stroke that crippled my left side. Upon release from therapy I started a ministry of daily e-mail devotions called E-Cheer to encourage others. I am a layman, having spent my career as service manager for the Allen Organ Co. |
