Don't Be Fooled

When Billy came home from Sunday School, he told his Mom that the U.S. Army engineers built a pontoon bridge to help the Israelites cross the Red Sea. When she grilled him about the story, he confessed, “Mom, if I told you what the teacher really said, you’d never believe me.”

Recently I listened to a CD made by a pianist. The playing was flashy with fingers all over the keyboard. However, it was obvious to me that the person was playing by ear (that can be ok), but, unfortunatately, had a very poor ear for harmony. The harmony was so wrong that I stopped listening. A non-musician listening to the same CD might possibly think it was fabulous. My point is this, “Don’t be fooled by flash!” That can easily be applied to what we hear from some TV or even local pulpits. If we are not versed in what God’s Word really says, we can easily be fooled by flash into thinking something is great when it really lacks substance. It’s like the time we found some sermon notes where one section was underlined with a side note that said. “Pound the pulpit and yell louder -- this is a weak point.” Fortunately, that wasn’t your pastor.

May I make this suggestion -- never get all of your Bible study from one source, be it pastor, teacher, TV preacher, author or whoever. To do so is very risky, because you may be fooled by enough truth to camouflage a hidden agenda of altered truth. This is how people get involved in cults.

A single source carries with it a risk. Yes, even Christians can be gullible.

1 Cor, 16:13 (nlt), “Be on guard. Stand true to what you believe. Be courageous. Be strong. And everything you do must be done with love.” Be on guard! Know your Bible! Protect your faith! Don’t be fooled by flash.
