DevotionalTitle: Always the Same by David George Always the SameInteresting want-ad: "Midwestern bachelor wants wife. Must be interested in farming and own a tractor. Please enclose picture -- of the tractor." I think he'd be a poor risk.Have you ever noticed how American phrases come and go? During the Watergate hearings, one of the young attorneys kept using the phrase, "at this point in time," and others immediately picked it up. But it is pure word pollution. You can mean the same thing by saying, "now." Speaking of word pollution, do you remember when a "mult-media learning center" was actually called a library? One of the current "in" phrases in certain circles is "compassionate conservatism." It isn't new. That phrase has been appropriate for Christians since Christ walked this earth. Conservative we are, but one of the hallmarks of Christianity is, or at least should be, compassion. A PA Dutch phrase says, "If you ain't Dutch, you ain't much." Well, if you know someone who claims to be a Christian, and they 'ain't' compassionate, they 'ain't' much of a Christian. Sorry to be so blunt, but that's the way it is. Compassion for those in any kind of need was a positive reaction that Jesus taught us by example. Do you know of any reason why "at this point in time" we should no longer follow that example? None that I know. In Heb. 13:8 (nlt), the writer says, "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever" -- so are His teachings. Let's take heed.
In 1997 I had a stroke that crippled my left side. Upon release from therapy I started a ministry of daily e-mail devotions called E-Cheer to encourage others. I am a layman, having spent my career as service manager for the Allen Organ Co. |
