DevotionalTitle: Discouragement by David George DiscouragementIf lawyers can be disbarred and clergymen defrocked, doesn’t it follow that electricians could be delighted, musicians denoted and dry cleaners depressed?Does it also follow that Christians can get discouraged? Unfortunately, yes. Should they be ashamed of that? Absolutely not. Even Jesus expressed discouragement in His prayer before being betrayed, “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me.” None of us will ever know the kind of loneliness He must have felt. Discouragement is a part of life with which we all deal, but we have a valuable resource not available to the non-Christian. Jesus gives us this wonderful offer in Matt. 11:28 (niv), “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Do you know of a better offer in your time of discouragement? Matt. 11:28 can be a call to turn your sin weary soul over to God through faith in Jesus Christ. It can also be an invitation for the discouraged Christian to find a place of solace. In either case, take advantage of His offer today -- right now.
In 1997 I had a stroke that crippled my left side. Upon release from therapy I started a ministry of daily e-mail devotions called E-Cheer to encourage others. I am a layman, having spent my career as service manager for the Allen Organ Co. |
