DevotionalTitle: Curb Apathy by David George Curb ApathyTwo eskimos sitting in a kayak got very chilly, so they lit a fire, but the boat sank proving that you can't have your kayak and heat it too. Ugh!A reader wrote yesterday and asked, "What's the difference between ignorance and apathy?" (it was a joke) My reply was that ignorance is when you are dumb about something but don't know it -- apathy is when you are dumb about something and know it but you don't care. Maybe you have a better explanation. An example: A non-believer is usually ignorant about God's claim on his life and doesn't even know it. A Christian can be ignorant of God's claims on his life because of not reading His word and then not even being concerned about it. That's inexcuseable apathy. Apathy is one of satan's most effective tools. Apathy can be applied to all sorts of Christian strategies, such as helping the needy, comforting the hurting, etc. It doesn't just affect our vertical relationship to God -- it works both directions affecting our fellow man as well. Apathy says, I don't care, and I don't care that I don't care. That's part of our "me" society. Rev. 3:19 (nlt) says, "I am the one who corrects and disciplines everyone I love. Be diligent and turn from your indifference." Apathy and indifference are synonyms that should have no place in the life of a Christian who is seeking joy in life. Why? Read the first part of that verse. Discipline is not exactly joyful. Court joy -- curb apathy!
In 1997 I had a stroke that crippled my left side. Upon release from therapy I started a ministry of daily e-mail devotions called E-Cheer to encourage others. I am a layman, having spent my career as service manager for the Allen Organ Co. |
