Devotionalby David George First time buyer to a car salesman: “If I put the car on Cruise Control, can I relax and eat my lunch?” Salesman, “Yes, but you’d better eat in a hurry before the crash.” We find a very challenging verse in Acts 20:24 (niv) that says, “But my life is worth nothing unless I use it for work assigned to me by the Lord Jesus--the work of telling others the Good News about God’s wonderful kindness and love.” Many of you will read that and possibly go on a guilt trip because you aren’t as bold as Paul. Remember, that is Paul’s statement, and it is a personal one. It may not be yours, although that would be great. In human terms, it takes a person with a car salesman’s personality to be a bold verbal witness for Jesus Christ. Not all of us are constructed that way. How many times has a preacher tried to make you feel guilty because you weren’t as bold as he was? It probably made you feel like a second-class Christian, didn’t it? That’s unfortunate. There are many ways to be a witness and make your statement for Jesus Christ. The important thing is to discover your own niche for serving Christ.and then to follow through and be consistent in your calling. I used to do that through music, but now my calling is E-Cheer. Maybe your calling is one of upholding others in prayer, comforting the comfortless, discipling a new Christian friend. Whatever it is, do it cheerfully and don’t let someone put a guilt trip on you for not being like them. You are your own person in Christ. Don’t hang your head -- be grateful.
PARTNER PROFILE In 1997 I had a stroke that crippled my left side. Upon release from therapy I started a ministry of daily e-mail devotions called E-Cheer to encourage others. I am a layman, having spent my career as service manager for the Allen Organ Co. |
