DevotionalTitle: Heard Anything Lately? by David George Heard Anything Lately? When I was a lad, we lived within 25 feet of a high speed trolley line that went from Allentown to Philadelphia. One run went past our house every night at eleven, but one evening it didn’t run, so I woke up and said, “what was that?”In regard to the recent events, one TV reporter talked about “The Sounds of Silence” as he described the empty stadiums and concert halls in our land. You’ve heard people say, “The silence was deafening.” The most silence I ever observed was in a cabin on an island in the middle of Lake Tamagami in Ontario, Canada. You could almost hear the blood rush through your veins. Never before or since have I been in an environment that was that quiet. Psalm 46:10 is very familiar, “Be still and know that I am God.” Psa. 4:4 is less familiar -- “In your anger (perhaps at bin Laden) do not sin; when you are on your beds, search your hearts and be silent.” Sometimes God has a difficult time in getting our attention because we are so taken up with all the noises around us. We hear the adage, “Silence is Golden,” and it is when we are silent enough to hear God speak to us. What have you heard lately? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ An aside -- perhaps, like me, you occasionally feel that very visible Christian spokes- persons make ill-timed and inappropriate comments that are an embarrassment to most of Christendom. Yesterday’s E-Cheer stated, “people just don’t think.” Even leaders can fall into that trap.
In 1997 I had a stroke that crippled my left side. Upon release from therapy I started a ministry of daily e-mail devotions called E-Cheer to encourage others. I am a layman, having spent my career as service manager for the Allen Organ Co. |
