Devotionalby David George On Good Morning America, Dr. Nancy Snyderman said, “Americans love taking a pill for quick fixes.” Wouldn’t it be nice if we had a pill that we could just drop into our computer when it gets ornery? As you watch TV, do you feel left out because you don’t have all the disorders that pharmaceutical commercials try to make you think you have. They would have you believe that you should join the “Sickness of the Day Club.” If they offered a pill to reverse baldness, I might be interested. Christians also have a tendency to look for quick fixes to every problem. They may feel that now that they are part of God’s family, He should just wave a magic wand and fix every little thing for them -- right now. I believe that there is a rather fine line between faith and foolishness just as there is a fine line between bravery and stupidity. God gave us intelligence, and I don’t think He intended for us to park it in the foyer like an umbrella every time we go to church. Listen carefully to what is proclaimed, and search The Word to make sure it agrees. You may be offered a quick fix for something that requires delicate surgery. We need to develop spiritual patience to wait on God rather than rush Him. Two verses from the Psalms for our consideration: 25:21, “Let integrity and uprightness preserve me (my responsibility); for I wait on Thee (His responsibility); 27:14, “Wait on the Lord, be of good courage, and He shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord.” What’s the hurry?
In 1997 I had a stroke that crippled my left side. Upon release from therapy I started a ministry of daily e-mail devotions called E-Cheer to encourage others. I am a layman, having spent my career as service manager for the Allen Organ Co. |
