Devotionalby David George A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery on a detour! What do you do when the bottom falls out of your world? You build a new platform and start over. I know some of you or your relatives may be going through some dire straits, but you must never, never give up. I just heard a statement by Thomas Jefferson: “I like the dreams of the future better than the history of the past.” Regardless of your age or circumstance, you must keep dreaming and planning for the future. Please pardon my personal examples, but maybe they will help someone. When I had my stroke and lost the use of my left arm, I supposed that my life-long joys of music performance and woodworking were over, but I refused to give up. I continued to direct a choir, and I bought a keyboard that allowed me to play the left hand part with my right hand and digitally record it. I could then play it back and simultaneously put the right hand part with it and make joyful music again. This Sunday, Betty and I will be playing an organ and keyboard duet. You can’t give up. After rehab I tried to do some woodworking, but my machinery was too large, heavy and difficult to operate, but I didn’t give up. I sold all of my equipment and started over with all smaller machinery that I could adapt for one-arm operation and use safely . It works great, and once again I can make creative sawdust. I’ll say it again -- You can’t give up! What’s the moral of the story? Determination beats depression. The Apostle Paul endured some untold hardships for the cause of Christ, and. some of his best writings were from prison. He never gave up. Think of these selected verses from Rom. 8: “We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him...if God is for us, who can be against us...in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.” Give up? -- Never!
PARTNER PROFILE In 1997 I had a stroke that crippled my left side. Upon release from therapy I started a ministry of daily e-mail devotions called E-Cheer to encourage others. I am a layman, having spent my career as service manager for the Allen Organ Co. |
