Title: Our Motive
 by David George

A 6 year old boy was overheard reciting the Lord’s prayer as follows: “And forgive us for our trash passes, as we forgive those who passed trash against us.” He may have had a good idea. I’ve been trashed -- have you?

Probably the most common greeting among Americans is, “How are you?” In other countries it is probably something like that. We usually say it without even thinking about it -- it is almost a reflex action. However, there are times when we wish we hadn’t said it, because the other party may give you a litany of woes that will make you late for whatever you had planned.

Have you ever had someone say to you, “How are you?,” but not give you opportunity to respond because they are too eager to tell you about them- selves. “How are you” is an expression of concern, and we should be concerned about others.

Christians through the centuries have been a concerned people by building hospitals, colleges, missions, etc. Are you old enough to remember when hospitals were run by the churches instead of “for profit?” It is part of our Christian heritage to be a caring and concerned people. In our “Me” society, it is becoming harder to maintain that tradition. I’m grateful that I came from a Brethren/Mennonite tradition where “others” are an impor- tant part of our faith.

Jesus’ entire ministry was devoted to serving those with needs. In Matt. 6:1 (niv), Jesus said, “Be careful not to do your acts of righteousness before men, to be seen by them.” Our motive should be to serve their need and not our need to be noticed. Have a serving day!
