Title: Watch the Packaging

Watch the Packaging

A skeptic is a person who when he sees the handwriting on the wall, claims it is a forgery.

On Thursday, at Walmart, I observed an interesting study in sales psychology. A mother was checking out and had, apparently, given her little girl permission to pick out some candy. She carefully eyed every package on every shelf until she got to the last item on the bottom shelf.

It was a very brightly colored metallic plastic wrapping. The minute she spotted that one, whammo -- her quest was over. I doubt if she had any idea what kind of candy it was, but it was the packaging that caught her eye.

I see some of that happening in our churches. Some people may attend not knowing or caring what is presented, but they are attracted by the attractive packaging in music or whatever. That can be good or bad. Hopefully, they will be able to discern the real message behind the glitter and come to know the Savior. On the other hand, they may stay on the fringe and just get a superficial picture of the Lord we love and never get any farther than the packaging. Church leaders -- don’t let the message get lost in the packaging. Make sure that Jesus Christ is always preeminent and not camouflaged.

In Col. 1:18 (nlt), Paul said, “Christ is the head of the church, which is His body. He is the first of all who will rise from the dead, so He is (or should be) first in everything.” He should be first in our worship. Don’t let the entertainment factor cloud the real purpose of our celebration.

Am I saying that our music in the church cannot have some entertaining value? Absolutely not. I’m saying it should not be our primary motive. Let’s keep our priorities in order. Just as in Christmas gifts, the package may be attractive, but the most important item is what is on the inside.
