Devotionalby David George NOTICE: My computer is going into the shop today, so you may not get a new E-Cheer until Monday or Tuesday. I suppose you’ve heard this PA Dutch quote: “The hurrier I go, the behinder I get.” Sometimes we go all directions at once and look like a drunken Octopus. Maybe we need to slow down and regroup. Are you old enough to remember this line from radio: “T’aint funny, McGee.”? Well, I’m in a situation that isn’t fun or funny. Through the years I’ve put a lot of “stuff” on my computer -- so much so that it has been progressively getting slow, slo-o-w and slo-o-o-o-wer. It’s going into the shop tomorrow to be completely stripped and refurbished. That’s a lot cheaper than a new computer. All afternoon yesterday was spent copying file after file onto CD’s. Fortunately, I have a CD burner (if you don’t have one, get one), so it is easy to copy myriads of files -- loads of storage space. I’m sure that there will be some things where later I’ll say, “I wish I had saved that. This brings up a point. Downtimes can be made into uptimes, and we need to apply that statement to our daily lives. My computer downtime will be made into an uptime with a much faster and workable computer again -- it is being rejuvinated. We can use our downtimes, through illness or whatever, into uptimes by using that time to let God rejuvinate us. Remember, it’s the bumps that we walk on. In Matt 14:23 (nlt), this is recorded: “Afterward He (Jesus) went up into the hills by Himself to pray. Night fell while He was there alone.” Even our Lord found the need to be alone with His Father for a time of rejuvination. That suggests a pattern for us.
In 1997 I had a stroke that crippled my left side. Upon release from therapy I started a ministry of daily e-mail devotions called E-Cheer to encourage others. I am a layman, having spent my career as service manager for the Allen Organ Co. |
