Title: Resist the Devil

What do you call a Boomerang that doesn’t work? A stick!

I get amused by goofs in TV commercials. I guess it’s because of my service manager’s mentality. On a recent commercial, a girl is shown playing a cello left handed. Firstly, I have never seen anyone play a Cello, Viola or Violin left handed -- it wouldn’t work because they would bump bows in an orchestra. Secondly, if she really was a left handed cellist, the strings would have been reversed -- they were not.

On a commercial I just saw, a boy put a box of pizza rolls into a microwave oven, but when he took them out of the oven they were on a plate. I wish we had a microwave oven that would do that. Satan is good at doing sleight of hand (sleight of mind) tricks with us. He’ll tell you that you are good enough on your own so that you don’t need God. He may even do the reverse and convince you that are worthless until you are depressed about it. He’ll do anything he can to drive a wedge between you and God. So what can we do? We can stay close enough to God and His Word so that there isn’t room for a wedge.

James tells us (chap. 4, vss. 7 & 8 nlt), “So humble yourselves before God. Resist the Devil and he will flee from you. Draw close to God, and He will draw close to you.” There you have it -- that’s the secret! By the way, where in Scripture does it say, “Get thee behind me, Satan” (and don’t push)? It’s in Matt. 16:23. Where in Scripture does it say, “Cleanliness is next to Godliness”? It’s in Hezekiah 12:7 See you tomorrow!

In 1997 I had a stroke that crippled my left side. Upon release from therapy I started a ministry of daily e-mail devotions called E-Cheer to encourage others. I am a layman, having spent my career as service manager for the Allen Organ Co.
