Devotionalby David George Are you old enough to remember these charming roadside signs -- Brother speeders, let’s rehearse, altogether “Good morning nurse” -- Burma Shave. One of our readers is a man who lost his wife to Alzheimer’s disease. He is now involved as an Alzheimer’s advocate. In reading some of his very helpful articles, I noticed this article called 10 Absolutes for Dealing with Alheimers Patients. Some of you undoubtedly know folks who are dealing with this terrible disease and can be helped by this. But as I read it, I realized that many of these things can be applied to our everday contacts with others, healthy or sick. 10 Absolutes for Caregivers: Never argue, instead agree. Never reason, instead, divert. Never shame, instead, distract. Never lecture, instead, reassure. Never “remember,” instead, reminisce. Never “I told you,” instead, repeat. Never “you can’t”, instead, “do what you can.” Never command or demand, instead, ask or model. Never condescend, instead, encourage or praise. Never force, instead, reinforce. Caregiving of any kind is a real labor of love, and those who can do it (it takes “special” people) are to be commended and held up in prayer. There are several applicable verses in Mark, like 9:35 (niv), “...if anyone wants to be first, he must be the very last, and the servant of all.” Also, Mark 10:43, ...whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant,” and 10:45, “the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.” Servanthood seems very special in the eyes of God. Let’s practice servanthood this weekend!
PARTNER PROFILE In 1997 I had a stroke that crippled my left side. Upon release from therapy I started a ministry of daily e-mail devotions called E-Cheer to encourage others. I am a layman, having spent my career as service manager for the Allen Organ Co. |
