Title: Give it the tithe test
 by David George

A couple just had a baby, but they couldn’t afford to buy a bed for it. So, they made one out of the crate their big-screen TV came in. Think about it!

Yesterday, we visited one of Florida’s large malls. As I strolled through it, I was impressed by how many of the stores and kiosks were filled with items that no one really needs. America’s economy seems driven by our “wants” rather than our needs. Even if we don’t want it, TV ads will try to convince us that we do need it.

There is often a fine line between our needs and our wants. There is nothing wrong in satisfying our desire for “wants,” so long as it does not upset our budget and get us into financial trouble. Even worse, is robbing God in order to get our “wants.” This scenario is probably often repeated -- people’s lives are filled with wants while at the same time they say they can’t afford to tithe. It does tell us something about their priorities. The opening story was meant to be a joke, but the concept is probably too often true.

A very familiar verse of Scripture is Phil 4:19 (nlt) where Paul says,

“And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from His glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.” Do you see the word “wants” in that verse? Neither do I. Now, let’s re-examine our need/want ratio and give it the tithe test.
