Title: Uphold your pastor

Little boy to pastor -- “When I grow up I’m going to give you some money because Daddy says you’re the poorest preacher we’ve ever had.” Folks, that’s a joke, and yet it may have been said -- read on.

There is a verse in 2 Timothy 4:10 (nlt) that is rife with speculation. Paul says, “Demas has deserted me because he loves the things of this life and has gone to Thessalonica.” I’ve heard messages that were pretty hard on Demas, but since this is all the information we have, let’s give Demas the benefit of the doubt. Maybe he just didn’t have the “stomach” to deal with the prison atmosphere and needed to find something with more creature comforts, such as there were in that day. Let’s face it, very few in this world have the “guts” to tough it out like Paul did.

We can liken that situation to present day pastors who leave the ministry for executive Christian work or even secular work. Some of them just don’t have the fortitude to deal with all the guff, gossip and gibberish to which present day congregations subject them. Dedicated as they may be, they are still human.

Uphold your pastor and pray for him/her, but most of all be friendly, not a frenetic foe. God forbid that a pastor should get discouraged to the point of giving up because of us. Think about it!
