Title: Weekend Edition -- Vacation from God?
 by David George

The toughest thing about making a living is that you have to get up the next day and do it all over again. Retirees have a different problem -- being retired takes all the fun out of weekends and holidays.

Whether we are still working or retired, we should never take a vacation from God. There is a temptation to go on a vacation and sort of let our church babysit God until we get back. Sorry, it doesn’t work that way.

We need God in our life, vacation or not.

As you go on summer vacation, think of Psalm 40:11 (niv), “Do not withhold your mercy from me, O Lord, may your love and your truth always protect me.” Take that verse with you. Repeat it as your prayer before you start out and as you drive the hectic highways. Not only take God with you, but take the opportunity of vacation to spend some extra time with Him to deepen your relationship.

Don’t forget -- while you are gone, your church’s expenses continue. Don’t take a vacation from tithing, either. Uh-oh, now I’ve started meddling. Have a great weekend.

In 1997 I had a stroke that crippled my left side. Upon release from therapy I started a ministry of daily e-mail devotions called E-Cheer to encourage others. I am a layman, having spent my career as service manager for the Allen Organ Co.
