Title: Your Decision

Your Decision

If you think gas prices are high, price a gallon of Jack Daniels and be glad your car runs on gas.

A reader has asked for an opinion on Christians using alcoholic beverages and/or serving them in your home for others.

When I was in first grade, I learned a poem that said -- "Tea is poison, coffee's worse--I drink water, safety first." I've since graduated to coffee and Wendy’s Frosties but nothing harder.

The key issue here is the danger of being a stumbling block. We have to remember that every alcoholic started with just one drink. I would hate to have been the one that gave a person that first drink or contributed to furthering someone's alcoholism. Alcoholism is the finished work of the brewer’s art, and it isn’t a pretty picture.

Drinking for you may not be a problem, because the Bible only seems to condemn the abuse or excess. The problem is that when you start, you have no way of knowing if it will lead to alcoholism. In Bible times, wine was apparently the only healthy thing to drink -- water was probably unsafe. They didn’t have a choice -- we do.

I don't drink because I have no way of knowing whether or not I am predisposed to alcoholism, and neither do you. So, I'm not willing to take that risk. I don't abstain from alcoholic drinks for religious reasons -- I hate the smell and taste of the stuff. So why spend my money on something that doesn’t taste good and makes me stink? If you think kissing a person who smokes is like licking an ash tray, try kissing someone who has just been drinking.

In Phil. 1:20 (nlt) Paul said, “For I live in eager expectation and hope that I will never do anything that causes me shame, but that I will always be bold for Christ...” In the next verse he says, “For to me, living is for Christ...” I can do that best by not drinking. You’ll have to make your own decision.
