Title: The Deity of Jesus
by Eric English
Verses that prove the deity of Jesus
Jesus as the Mighty God, and the Everlasting Father
- For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the
government
will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called
Wonderful, Counselor,
Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince
of Peace.
Isaiah 9:6
- This verse is speaking of Jesus Christ; even Jehovah's Witnesses
will
agree with that, but they can't explain it. In addition, in
the New World
Translation, the Jehovah's Witnesses Bible,
"Mighty God" and "Everlasting
Father" are capitalized. If these
capitalized titles aren't referring
to God, then who are they
referring to? Keep in mind that when referencing
Jesus as "a god"
the New World Translation never capitalizes the word "god."
But
it's capitalized here in Isaiah 9:6. And if Jesus is just "a god"
(as in the New World Translation's translation of
John 1:1), and
not The Mighty God, then why does God say so many times
in the Bible
that He is one God, and that there is no other? Without a
doubt,
this passage is calling Jesus The Mighty God. And even though the
Jehovah's Witnesses don't believe that Jesus is God, their own Bible
says
so.
Jesus as the Eternal God
- ...of whom are the fathers and from whom, according to the
flesh,
Christ came, who is over all, the eternally blessed God.
Amen.
Romans 9:5
- Please read chapter 9 to understand the context.
- But to the Son He says: "Your throne, O God,
is forever and ever.
Hebrews 1:8
- This is God the Father talking to Jesus here. He's calling
Him
God. Yet in the Old Testament, God tells us He is the ONLY GOD.
What's
going on here? Scripture is telling us that Jesus and the
Father are one
and the same.
- And we know that the Son
of God has come and has given us an understanding
that we may know
Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in
His Son Jesus
Christ. This is the true God and eternal life.
I John 5:20
Jesus as one with God, as God Himself, and as the eternal
creator
- In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and
the
Word was God. All things were made through Him, and without
Him nothing
was made that was made.
John 1:1
- Please read this chapter to understand Who the Word is. I'll
give
you a hint, it's Jesus. By the way, the New World Translation,
the Jehovah's
Witnesses Bible, translates this verse incorrectly.
To see the proof for
yourself, check out my
John 1:1 page.
Jesus as eternal and as the Father
- "Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My
day, and he saw it and was
glad."
Then the Jews said to Him, "You are not yet fifty years old, and
have you seen Abraham?"
Jesus said to them, "Most assuredly, I say to
you, before Abraham was,
I AM."
John 8:56-58
-
Here Jesus is telling the Jewish leaders that He was around to visit
Abraham.
Not only was Jesus claiming to have lived a VERY LONG TIME,
He also used
the term "I AM" for Himself, the same name that God
Almighty gave Himself
back in Moses' time. Look at the next verse.
- And God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM." And He said,
"Thus
you shall say to the children of Israel, 'I AM has sent
me to you.'"
Exodus 3:14
Jesus as the head of ALL power
- And you are complete in Him, who is the Head of all
principality
and power.
Colossians 2:10
- Read this chapter to know who "Him" is. I'll give you a
hint . . .
It's Jesus. If He's the head of all principality and
power, then what
about God the Father? The answer is simple.
Jesus and God are the same.
Read my statement
of faith if you're confused.
Jesus as God & Savior
- To those who have obtained like precious faith with us by the righteousness
of our God and Savior Jesus Christ . . .
II Peter 1:1
- For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men,
teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live
soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed
hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ,
who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed
and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works.
Titus 2:11-14
- And Thomas answered and said to Him, "My Lord and my God!"
John 20:28
- This one is very interesting, because the New World Translation
(Jehovah's Witnesses translation) also says the same thing. Their translation
even capitalizes the word "God" when Thomas uses it. Now don't you suppose
that if Jesus was NOT God, that He would have rebuked Thomas? I think He
would have. It's only logical that if Jesus was NOT God, that He would
have told Thomas so. But He doesn't. In fact, He encourages others to
believe the same thing. Read it for yourself. This is a very clear example
of Jesus claiming to be God. And the New World Translation seems to agree
with Him.
Jesus as the First & the Last
- "I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last."
Revelation
1:11
- This is Jesus speaking here. In Isaiah, God calls Himself
the First & the Last. Check out the next verse.
- Listen to Me, O Jacob, And Israel, My called: I am He, I am the
First, I am also the Last.
Isaiah 48:12
Jesus as the true God
- And we know that the Son
of God has come and has given us an understanding
that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His
Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life.
I John 5:20
- Interestingly enough, this verse says that the Son of God is also
God Himself! In other words, Jesus is God. How can God's Son be God Himself?
It's a little confusing for us mortals, but it's what the Bible teaches.
Jesus as the express image of God
- ...His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom
also He made the worlds; who being the brightness of His glory and
the
express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of
His power...
Hebrews 1:2-3
Jesus as the King of kings and the Lord of lords
- ...our Lord Jesus Christ's appearing, which He will manifest in His
own time, He who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings
and Lord of lords, who alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable
light...
I Timothy 6:15
- In Deuteronomy, God is called by that title. Check out the next
verse.
- For the LORD your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great
God, mighty and awesome...
Deuteronomy 10:17
Jesus as Judge
- When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with
Him, then
He will sit on the throne of His glory. All the nations will
be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one from another, as a
shepherd divides his sheep from the goats. Then the King will say to those
on His right hand,
"Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom
prepared for you from the foundation of the world..."
Matthew 25:31-34
- This is a scenario in which Jesus is judging the world. The Son
of Man is referring to Jesus, in fact, that's Jesus' most commonly used
name for Himself.
- I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who
will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom.
II Timothy 4:1
- Him God raised up on the third day, and showed Him openly, not to all
the people, but to witnesses chosen before by God, even to us who ate and
drank with Him after He arose from the dead. And He commanded us to preach
to the people, and to testify that it is He who was ordained by God to
be Judge of the living and the dead.
Acts 10:40-42
- The Old Testament points out many times that God is Judge of the
world. If God is Judge, and Jesus is Judge, does that means there's two
judges of the world? I don't think so. Look at the following verses.
- Let the heavens declare His righteousness, For God Himself is Judge.
Psalm 50:6
- Far be it from You to do such a thing as this, to slay the righteous
with the wicked, so that the righteous should be as the wicked; far be it
from You! Shall not the Judge of the earth do right?
Genesis 18:25
- This is Abraham interceding for Sodom. Wouldn't it be nice to have
a relationship with the Judge of the earth like Abraham did? It's possible,
you know.
- But the LORD shall endure forever; He has prepared His throne for
judgement. He shall judge the world in righteousness, And He shall
administer judgment for the peoples in uprightness.
Psalm 9:8
Jesus as God and as a man
- God was manifest in the flesh...
I Timothy 3:16
- Jesus was the only One that lived among us as a man. I guess that
means that if God was manifest in the flesh, that Jesus was God.
- The Jews answered Him, saying, "For a good work we do not stone You,
but for blasphemy, and because You, being a Man, make Yourself God."
John 10:33
- Then fear came upon all, and they glorified God, saying, "A great prophet
has risen up among us"; and, "God has visited His people.
Luke 7:16
- Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall
call His name
Immanuel, " which is translated, "God with Us."
Matthew 1:23
Jesus as one with the Father
- "If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; and from
now on you know Him and have seen Him."
Philip said to Him, "Lord,
show us the Father, and it is sufficient for us."
Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known
Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you
say, 'Show us the Father?"
John 14:7-9
- I and the Father are one.
John 10:33
