It Takes Faith to see God Work
Exodus 14: 16&21 (Amp)
Lift up your rod and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it, and
the Israelites shall go on dry ground through the midst of the sea… And
Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the Lord caused the sea to
go back by a strong wind all that night, and made the sea dry land, and
the waters were divided. (Amp)
What is fundamental to these scriptures is faith in God and obedience to
his word. We must be conscious deep in our spirits that Moses’ rod did nothing.
It was God who did everything. God made Moses use the rod as a way of encouraging
him – to let him see something with his natural eyes. It was easier for
him to be persuaded when he saw things with his natural eyes. But the rod
itself did nothing.
The rod was just an ordinary stick of wood, which Moses had used while shepherding
his father-in-law’s flocks in the desert. So he knew it was not magical;
there was nothing to it. What was important was that he first knew the One
who gave him instructions.
Moses did nothing of his own. God came down to his (Moses’) own level from
the start and used the rod to demonstrate his power (Exodus 4:1-5), almost
like a practice run for Moses, so that it would be easier for him and the
Israelites to believe God in the difficult situation with Pharaoh. From
then Moses knew that his God was powerful, that he was a God of the impossible.
Moses had faith in God.
But it was also important for him to obey. Moses had to do whatever God
told him or he would have limited God’s ability to work. It wasn’t that
God would not be able to work, since he is God. But he would not have been
able to work on man’s behalf because that is the way God designed it from
the beginning. He would work on man’s behalf in response to man’s faith
and obedience to him.
So when Moses stretched his hand with the rod across the Red Sea, we must
understand in our hearts that the rod did nothing. It was not even some
mystical point of contact. I believe that all it represented was Moses’
obedience to God and his faith in him. He stretched out his rod in obedience
and God sent the winds – the East wind, which blew the waters apart and
kept it separated all night.
Like Moses, obedience and faith are what
it takes for you to please God and to see his work in your life.
