This site and the privilege of sharing the word on the net
is a major blessing to me especially when you consider that only a year

God bless all of you.
Hello again, I pray that you have had a good Easter
and are keen to continue in the word of God. This week we will be continuing
the “Is it ok to?” series and looking at a controversial subject, and that
is Christians and alcoholic drinks. We will be looking into the bible to
answer the question, “Is it ok for Christians to drink?”
1 Timothy 5 v
23 “Drink no longer water only, but use a little wine for thy stomachs sake
and thine often infirmities.”
Psalm 104 v 14-15 “He (God) makes grass
grow for cattle, and plants for man to cultivate- bringing forth food from
the earth: Wine that gladdens the heart of man and oil to make his face
shine.”
As with all Bible studies, the scriptures must be taken in context, and
a balanced approach must be applied. In short, the bible teaches that wine
is good and that sensible use is fine, and it is this context we will be
examining first. Wine in the bible can either mean (fermented/alcoholic
wine) or (New wine unfermented/none alcoholic wine). In the two scriptures
above and all the other scriptures we will look at today, the word ‘Wine’
means alcoholic wine, the sort that if you drink too much of, you will end
up drunk. Not so good!
Wine is good, it is pleasant to drink, it has medicinal
properties (see Luke 10 v 34), it has many other uses in preserving and
flavouring food. Many Christians think that once you become a Christian
you must never drink wine again, but this is not what the bible teaches.
The problem seems to be some people cannot differentiate between “drinking
wine” and “drunkenness.” Also there is a time to drink and a time not to
drink. Priests in the Old Testament were forbidden to drink wine before
they entered into the tabernacle (Leviticus 10 v 9) also people who had
taken a nazarite vow would abstain from wine for a set period, after which
they were free to drink again, should they choose. Please note that in (John
2 v 1-11) Jesus turned water into wine and it was described as the ‘best’,
note also that Jesus himself did drink wine, and was criticized by some
who saw him.
Luke 7 v 33-34 “For john the Baptist came neither eating
bread nor drinking wine, and you say, He has a demon,’ The son of man came
eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend
of tax collectors and sinners. But wisdom is proved right by all her children.”
What can we say then? Its ok to drink wine, and its ok not to drink wine,
the choice is yours. Some people who have become Christians have come from
a background of alcohol abuse, and because of this have opted to become
‘tea total’ and not to drink wine again. I respect their viewpoint and we
need to be sensitive to those people that for any reason struggle in this
area.
Romans 14 v 20-21 “Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of
food. All food is clean but it is wrong for a man to eat anything that causes
someone else to stumble. It is better not to eat meat or to drink wine or
to do anything that will cause your brother to fall.”
Whilst the bible teaches that its ok to drink wine, it teaches very clearly
that excessive drinking or drunkenness is seriously wrong. In order to get
a balanced oversight we must look at the following verses that warn against
excess.
Proverbs 20 v 1 “Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and
whosoever is deceived there by is not wise.”
Genesis 9 v 20-21 “Noah,
a man of the soil, proceeded to plant a vineyard. When he drank some of
its wine, he became drunk and lay uncovered inside his tent. Ham, the father
of Canaan, saw his father’s nakedness and told his two brothers outside.”
1
Corinthians 5 v 11 “I am writing to you that you must not associate
with anyone who calls himself a brother but is sexually immoral or greedy,
an idolater or a slanderer, a drunkard or a swindler. With such a man do
not even eat.”
To conclude then, wine in moderation is fine, but drunkenness is a sin.
I hope you have found this article useful. I pray you have a wonderful week,
lots of love, kev.
