This site and the privilege of sharing the word on the net
is a major blessing to me especially when you consider that only a year
ago I had never used a pc. But I have been obedient to the Lord, and been
taught, and now have this blessing bestowed upon me . Thank you Lord.

God bless all of you.
This week I will be starting the series of "is it
ok" studies, which will be aimed at addressing some of the most common questions
that Christians ask themselves. These studies will be aimed at new Christians,
but they may be useful for the older Christians who have never got round
to that particular subject. Whatever, I pray these studies are a blessing
to you and that you are able to gleam something from them. Well lets get
started. The study this week is "Is it ok to joke now that I am a Christian."
The answer is yes but as with all the questions that we Christians ask our
selves we must turn to Gods word, the Bible to get the answer.
1 Thessalonians
5 v 22 " Abstain from all appearances of evil."
The reason I have included
this verse is to point out that while it is not a sin in it’s self to tell
jokes, they must not be of the type that dishonor God. The Lord has got
a sense of humor, of that I am sure and I must say that a lot of good preachers
use humor to aid them in putting the congregation at ease and to give them
a break if the teaching is getting a bit on the heavy side. I must say,
I like a good "rib tickler myself." A good guide to humor/joking is to
ask yourself one question. Would you tell that joke to Jesus? If the answer
is yes, then praise god for humor, if the answer is no, then it’s not for
you. I praise God for laughter, have you ever-heard groups of children laughing?
What a beautiful sound it is. There is humor in the Bible, in the book
of "1 kings" Elijah; a mighty man of God was confronting the prophets of
Baal. They were trying to show Elijah how powerful there false god (Baal)
was. They built an alter, put a sacrificed bull on it and then called to
there god (Baal) to light the fire. They called, danced and chanted all
morning but nothing happened. After this Elijah made a comment, which is
humorous to say the least.
1 kings 18 v 27 " At noon Elijah began to taunt
them. "Shout louder!" he said, "Surely he is a god! Perhaps he is in deep
thought, or busy, or traveling. Maybe he is sleeping and must be awakened."
Well they continued to do their stuff but nothing happened. Of course not,
the only god that answers prayers is our God, The Lord God almighty. Humor
is good for you. Lets take a look at some Bible verses to get the idea.
Proverbs 17 v 22 " A merry heart is as good medicine"
Luke 6 v 21 "Blessed
are you that weep now, for you shall laugh"
Psalm 126 v 1-2 "When the
Lord brought back the captives to Zion, we were like men who dreamed. Our
mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with songs of joy"
To summarize
then, humor is good, the right kind of joking is ok, but I would stay away
from practical jokes as these kind of jokes often go wrong, or can offend.
I can remember some years ago I parked my car in my boss’s parking space
at work thinking that he would find it funny, but instead he was offended
by it. He thought I was treating him with contempt, which the Bible says
we must not do. I did repent and apologize to him, but I learned a lesion
here. The Devil does not have a day off and the Bible says that he prowls
around seeking someone to devour. Don’t give him an inch. If your humor
has offended someone then it was too coarse or insensitive for that situation.
I would like to finish with a scripture that brings joy to my heart. John
10 v 10 " The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; but I have
come that they (you) may have life, and life to the full" God bless all
of you, love Kev.
