The Book Of James Part 9
God
bless all of you.
I hope you all enjoyed Don argent’s teaching last week,
it is a privilege to know such a man of God. This week we will continue
with our study of the book of James, and starting on chapter five.
James
5: 1-6. Now listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the misery
that is coming upon you. Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your
cloths. Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify
against you and eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in the
last days. Look! The wages you failed to pay the workmen who mowed your
fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached
the ears of the lord Almighty. You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence.
You have fattened yourselves in the day of slaughter. You have condemned
and murdered innocent men who were not opposing you.
Right, can you remember the first thing we must do when approaching bible
scripture? We must ‘Qualify’ which means, take it in context, who was it
addressing, what problem was James addressing and are we guilty of the same
sin at this moment in time. It is clear that James is talking about rich
people who are ‘In love’ and ‘Trusting entirely’ in their earthly wealth.
These people are so greedy for gain that they have neglected to pay their
workers their pay, who are now petitioning God with their hurts and hunger.
These people will quite happily condemn and kill if it will gain them a
‘political’ advantage. These people have put their entire trust in their
bank accounts, their gods of wood and stone (that is their houses) and not
forgetting their Cadillac’s.
Remember, all wealth is temporary. The moment
one dies, one is bankrupt, you can’t take it with you. By the general flow
of these verses it is clear that James is warning people to repent (Turn
away from) this kind of behavior and get their eyes back on the Lord Jesus
Christ. Lets see what Jesus taught on this particular subject.
Matthew
6 v 19-21 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth
and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for
yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and
where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, your
heart is also.”
God only wants the best for us. To a true Christian, riches, jewels and
pearls will never satisfy. I am not saying it is a sin to have riches, jewels
and pearls, in fact it can be good and useful to have these things, but
what I am saying is the only thing that has lasting fulfilment, is a relationship
with our Lord Jesus Christ. A famous Christian author, C. S. Lewis wrote
in one of his books (Mere Christianity) “Keep your eyes on heaven and you
will get the world chucked in. Keep your eyes on the world and you will
get nothing. And on this note I will bid you good bye till we meet again,
lots of love, Kev!
